Film Review: Tammy
October 19, 2014
/Rating: M
Release Date: October 16th, 2014
Pulling from a variety of Hollywood talent (Will Ferrell, Ben Falcone, Kathy Bates and Allison Janney all feature on the bill) Tammy should’ve been a film filled with rib-ripping belly laughs, but sadly misses the mark.
Fired from her job, with a totalled car, a cheating husband and a Mum who says she’s on a cycle of rotating hissy-fits, Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) escapes onto the open road with her alcoholic Grandmother (Susan Sarandon) and $6000 to rough-arm her way across America’s back-end in search of enlightenment. Throwing back beers and casting caution to the wind, the two romp their way through cheap hotel rooms and lesbian fire-sides, delivering all the requisite one-liners and awkward hookups you’d expect.
However, boxed in by a narrow script and underdeveloped characters, Tammy has little to contribute to the ‘crossroads’ dialogue and wastes McCarthy’s creative talent on a typecast role and flat-line film.
High note: A subtle encouragement that making a life-change is allowed to be messy, it’s ok. Face up to your demons, pick up the pieces and walk on. You can come out the other side with clarity and conviction.
Low note: You just paid $20 plus popcorn to hear that.
Best digested with: Hot chips and a Vanilla Thick-shake.
5/10.
