The Palmetto based non-profit changing the aid game

/Offering aid to developing nations is nothing new. Desiring to facilitate change and positive growth in countries with need is a consistent worldwide practice. Many admirable organizations exist to champion the cause of the forgotten, restless, and weak.
However, Palmetto Medical Initiative (PMI) distinguish themselves with a unique development approach.
Operating medical centers in Nicaragua and Uganda, their facilities are entirely staffed by local communities and professionals. The centers are managed with a mindset to bring self-funded sustainability to each site within 18 months – a far cry from the ‘drop money and run’ philosophy of yesteryear.
Coupling vision for widely available health services with entrepreneurial business prowess, PMI’s founders have designed a model of aid giving leadership power to locals, and setting external philanthropy further toward to the sidelines. External contribution is of course vital to expanding their projects, but independent regional sustainability is their goal.
PMI’s International Project Director Michael O’Neal spoke with Editor Laura Bennett to explain the philosophy behind their organization, and plans for the future:
